The FortiOS workshop will consist of modules introducing the FortiGate next-generation firewall (NGFW) for those who have not used it before or for those who require a refresher. It will also cover various core security and network components required by businesses and resellers. We prefer that you bring some level of understanding in networking and network security concepts, as networking fundamentals are not covered during the workshop.

Course overview:

Day 1:  

  • Introduction to FortiGate: learn about FortiGate administration through the command line interface (CLI) and graphical user interface (GUI). You will also backup and restore a configuration file, create a new administrator account, and modify administrator access permissions.
  • Security Fabric: Learn how to configure the Fortinet Security Fabric, and access and understand the physical and logical topology views.
  • Firewall policies: learn what a firewall policy is, how to configure them, and perform various tests to confirm that traffic is matching the appropriate firewall policies.
  • Routing: determine and understand how to configure router settings and test scenarios to learn how FortiGate makes routing decisions.
  • Web filtering: learn how web filtering takes place on a FortiGate, including configuring a FortiGuard category-based filter, applying the web filter profile to a firewall policy, testing the configuration, and basic troubleshooting.

Day 2:  

  • Application control: learn how to apply application control in both profile-based and policy-based modes to apply an appropriate action to specific application traffic.
  • Antivirus: learn how to configure, use, and monitor antivirus scanning on Local FortiGate in both flow-based and proxy-based inspection modes.
  • Intrusion prevention system (IPS) and Denial-of-Service (DoS): learn and configure the FortiGate’s intrusion prevention system and Denial-of-Services. Experience firsthand with a vulnerability scanner and custom script to generate attacks on a FortiGate secured network.
  • Internet protocol security (IPsec) virtual private network (VPN): learn and configure site-to-site IPsec VPN tunnels between two FortiGate devices.
  • Introduction to FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager: extend the Fortinet Security Fabric with FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager to simplify and reduce administration overhead.
